A former police chief superintendent and the rookie officer with whom he had a secret affair have remarkably reinvented themselves as entrepreneurs in the same affluent West Yorkshire town, operating businesses just 150 metres apart.
From Police Scandal to High Street Neighbours
Daniel Greenwood, 42, the former £103,000-a-year 'silver commander' for Bradford during the pandemic, has opened an artisan deli with his wife Laura, 43, called Deli @ Eldwick Creamery. Meanwhile, his former lover Caitlin Howarth, 26, runs a beauty business offering semi-permanent makeup treatments under the name 'By Cait' at the nearby Amythyst Clinic in Bingley.
A Forbidden Romance During Lockdown
The pair's relationship began when Howarth was just weeks into her probationary period with West Yorkshire Police in 2020, while Greenwood was a married father-of-two seventeen years her senior. Despite being responsible for enforcing strict Covid lockdown rules, Greenwood would sneak off for secret trysts with the young officer.
A misconduct panel later heard how their illicit romance involved exchanging sexually explicit messages and pictures, creating what was described as 'tittle-tattle' and 'gossip in the ranks' among colleagues.
The Affair's Discovery and Aftermath
The relationship only came to light when Howarth was investigated by anti-corruption officers after matching with a drug dealer on Tinder. When she informed Greenwood about her contact with Joseph Shaw, he ironically responded: 'He won’t stop until he’s shagged you. That’s not ok.'
Once the affair surfaced in November 2021, a panicked Greenwood attempted a factory reset on his iPhone to wipe evidence. The misconduct hearing in September 2024 revealed senior officers had raised concerns after he disclosed Howarth's GCSE results to HR, personally delivered her uniform, and attended her occupational health appointment.
Career Endings and New Beginnings
Greenwood quit his 21-year policing career in September 2024 just days before he could be formally dismissed for gross misconduct. The disciplinary panel ruled he had abused his position of trust and would have been sacked had he not already resigned. He has since been barred from policing indefinitely.
Howarth was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, but charges were later dropped and disciplinary proceedings were quietly shelved last year.
Conflicting Accounts of the Relationship
During investigations, Greenwood insisted the 'sexual attraction and flirtation was mutual' and claimed it was 'habitually initiated' by Howarth, alleging she 'found older men... more attractive.'
Howarth offered a different perspective, stating she did not have sex with Greenwood because of his rank but 'because I was going through a rough time with my boyfriend.' She added: 'I ended up getting feelings and then that’s how it happened. He always asked me to delete the messages. I think he deleted them so that his wife didn’t see but he used to say make sure you delete the pictures or delete the messages.'
Entrepreneurial Ventures
Greenwood's transformation into a cheesemaker represents a dramatic career shift. On his business website, he wrote: 'The strains and distractions of becoming an adult took over until events in 2020/2021 made me reevaluate my life. I had always flirted with the idea of cheesemaking. One cold November morning in 2021, I decided to change the course of my life.'
The Eldwick Creamery Ltd website now states: 'Eldwick Creamery Ltd was formed in 2022 by Daniel and Laura, a husband and wife who had ambitions of starting their own business to help them create a work/life balance and spend as much time with their children as they could.'
Meanwhile, Howarth has built a beauty brand catering to her 12,000 Instagram followers. She offers £200 microblading and £240 'permanent lipstick' procedures. Last October, she shared a beaming photograph of herself clutching a certificate, telling followers: 'Recently qualified in semi permanent make up and will be offering lip blush & microblading treatments. Had an amazing training experience and left feeling so confident. Cannot wait to start this new venture.'
Geographical Proximity
The former lovers now operate their businesses barely 70 seconds' walk apart in Bingley, with Greenwood understood to remain with his wife in a £500,000 house in the town. Both are listed as directors of Eldwick Creamery Ltd, while Howarth rents her beauty space at the Amythyst Clinic.
The pair were first introduced in 2019 when Howarth was aged 20, after her mother - a governor at Greenwood's children's primary school - sought advice on her daughter joining the police after university. A tribunal later concluded his motivations 'morphed, at least in part, into sexual self-interest.'
