Nigel Farage announced he will quit as an MP to fight a by-election in Clacton, protesting intense scrutiny over unregistered donations. The Reform UK leader claims he is a victim of a "political tool" used by Westminster opponents and media "haranguing" his family. However, the stunt backfired as other parties boycotted, leaving him facing the same issues.
Housing Row Over Clacton Home
Last year, questions emerged about Farage's housing arrangements after it was revealed his partner Laure Ferrari bought their £885,000 Clacton home, despite Farage previously claiming he bought it. Ferrari paid standard stamp duty, while Farage, with a property empire, would have paid an extra 5% (£44,000). A BBC probe found no evidence Ferrari or her family had funds for a mortgage-free purchase. Labour accused Farage of misleading constituents.
School Racism Allegations
Farage faced backlash over allegations of racism and antisemitism at Dulwich College. Director Peter Ettedgui claimed Farage made pro-Hitler comments and joked about gas chambers. Farage described them as "alleged" remarks and read a letter stating the comments were offensive but not malicious. Reform UK denied the claims, calling them a smear campaign.
Christopher Harborne Donation Scandal
The Electoral Commission is investigating whether Farage should have declared a £5 million gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne in 2024. Farage initially said it was for personal security, then claimed it was a "reward" for Brexit campaigning. He later alleged his phone was hacked by Russian hackers, providing no evidence. The Mirror reported Farage used the gift to revamp his Surrey home, with estimated costs up to £350,000.
Staffing and Housing from a Fraudster
Farage was referred to Parliament's standards watchdog for allegedly failing to declare benefits from George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster who offered to launder drug money. Cottrell, known as "Posh George," served eight months in US prison for wire fraud. Labour urged the Electoral Commission to investigate whether the support should have been declared. Reform UK denied any breach of conduct.
