Netflix Releases Devastating True Crime Documentary on Rachel Nickell Murder

Netflix has quietly added a new true crime documentary, The Murder of Rachel Nickell, which examines the brutal killing of a young mother on Wimbledon Common in 1992. The crime, which shocked Britain, saw Rachel Nickell, 23, stabbed nearly 50 times while walking her dog, with her two-year-old son Alex as the sole witness.

The documentary features exclusive archive footage, first-hand accounts from family members, and insights from leading forensic experts. It explores how a flawed, highly-publicised investigation led to the wrongful prosecution of Colin Stagg, who spent over a decade under suspicion before the case was reopened in 2002.

Directed by BAFTA-nominated Lucy Bowden, the film also includes a previously unseen home video of Alex speaking about his mother, which has left viewers emotional. One viewer remarked on TikTok: 'Utterly heartbroken watching that sweet lovely boy talk about his Mum's murder.'

Alongside the documentary, Netflix has also released a three-part drama series, The Witness, based on the same true story, following Alex and his father as they deal with the aftermath of the violence. Both titles are available to stream from today, June 4.
