Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed that he underwent treatment for early-stage prostate cancer, a diagnosis he chose to keep private to prevent Iran from exploiting it for propaganda during an ongoing conflict.
Diagnosis and Treatment
The 76-year-old leader disclosed on Friday that a small, early-stage malignant tumour was detected during routine medical monitoring following surgery for an enlarged prostate at the end of 2024. He opted to address the issue immediately. Netanyahu stated that the treatment, carried out in Jerusalem, successfully 'removed the problem' and left no trace of the cancer.
Delayed Announcement
Netanyahu explained that he delayed the announcement of his diagnosis to prevent it from being exploited by Iran for propaganda purposes during a period of heightened conflict. He emphasised that he is now in 'excellent condition' and has been cleared by his medical team.
The prime minister's decision to keep the diagnosis confidential reflects the delicate security situation and the potential for adversaries to use health issues as a tool for psychological warfare. Netanyahu's office confirmed that he remains fully capable of carrying out his duties and will continue to lead the country.
This revelation comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, with Netanyahu having previously stated that there would be 'no ceasefire' in Lebanon and vowing to strike Hezbollah with full force. The prime minister's health disclosure adds a personal dimension to the broader geopolitical challenges facing Israel.
