A Finnish startup, Varjo, has launched a virtual reality headset called the VR-1, priced at $5,995 (£4,700), which it claims offers resolution comparable to human vision. The device is aimed at industrial sectors such as aerospace, automotive, architecture, and engineering, rather than consumer markets.
The VR-1 features a resolution of over 60 pixels per degree, which Varjo says is 20 times greater than any other VR headset currently available. This is achieved through a 'Bionic display' combining a microLED screen with 3,000 pixels per inch and an AMOLED outer display.
The headset also includes advanced eye-tracking technology, described by Varjo as 'the most advanced and powerful stereo eye tracking technology ever integrated into a VR headset.' The company has collaborated with partners including Airbus, Audi, Saab, Volkswagen, and Volvo during development.
Varjo has raised around $45 million from investors since its founding in 2016. The VR-1 is now available in 34 countries across North America, Europe, and Hong Kong, with an annual service license costing an additional $995.
