San Francisco Mayor Faces Allegations of Power Restoration Favouritism for Daughter's Performance
Claims have emerged that San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie demanded the restoration of electricity to the city's opera house during a widespread blackout to enable his heiress daughter's performance in The Nutcracker ballet. The 49-year-old mayor, an heir to the Levi's fortune, allegedly instructed energy officials to prioritise efforts on the War Memorial Opera House on December 21st.
Allegations and Denials in Public Hearing
At a recent hearing, Pacific Gas and Electric Co (PG&E) Supervisor Sumeet Singh asserted that Mayor Lurie directed teams to focus on supplying power to the opera house, ensuring his daughter Taya Lurie could take the spotlight. Taya was performing as Clara, the central character in Tchaikovsky's Christmas classic, during a matinee showing. A transcript of Singh's comments was uncovered by The San Francisco Chronicle, where he stated, 'We were requested by the mayor to provide temporary generation to that specific location and we responded to that and by that time we had about 90% of our customers restored.'
However, in a surprising twist, PG&E later issued a statement retracting Singh's claims, with the mayor's office also refuting the accusation. PG&E spokesperson David McCulloch clarified, 'The mayor did not ask or direct PG&E to restore power to the opera house.' He added that Singh 'misunderstood this information' during the hearing. The mayor's office emphasised that Lurie had been pushing for citywide power restoration and denied any specific directives to PG&E employees.
Contradictory Evidence and Ongoing Scrutiny
Despite the denials, text messages obtained by The San Francisco Standard reveal that Mayor Lurie was actively receiving updates from a PG&E representative about the opera house's power situation. Jake Zigelman, VP of the region, messaged, 'Opera house update. ur team is onsite and has been in touch with the opera folks. We’ve been told they have enough natural light and emergency backup power to move ahead with 2pm performance. We have a vendor mobilized to support temporary generation for the 7pm show. Not 100% on timing but working feverishly to make that happen.'
Additionally, a post on X by PG&E on December 21st confirmed, 'SF Outage Update. The 2PM #Nutcracker performance at the #SFOpera House is ON using its backup generator. PG&E is helping secure temporary generation for the 7 PM show.' The mayor's office acknowledged Taya's involvement in the performance, with footage uncovered by the Daily Mail showing her as Clara during the seasonal run.
Background and Broader Context of the Blackout
Mayor Lurie and his wife Becca Prowda, who works for California Governor Gavin Newsom's office, reside in a $17 million nine-bedroom home in Pacific Heights. The blackout, which began on December 20th, left approximately 130,000 residents without power over the festive period, highlighting the city's infrastructure challenges. While large parts of San Francisco remained in darkness, the opera house managed to proceed with its shows, raising questions about resource allocation during emergencies.
This incident underscores ongoing debates about privilege and public service, as officials balance personal interests with civic duties during crises. The conflicting accounts from PG&E and the mayor's office continue to fuel speculation and calls for transparency in handling such events.
