Former England manager Kevin Keegan has confirmed he is battling stage four cancer. The 75-year-old football legend first disclosed his diagnosis in January after experiencing ongoing abdominal symptoms.
Speaking at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle, Keegan revealed the advanced stage of his illness. He recounted a conversation with his doctor, a Liverpool supporter, saying: 'They said we have a top doctor with this new way of fighting what you have got. Which is stage four cancer.' Keegan joked about the doctor's 33% success rate, adding: 'I thought he might say 80, maybe 90! Anyway, I am still here at the moment…'
Keegan also expressed a desire to return to St James' Park, home of Newcastle United, for the first time since leaving his managerial role in 2008. He wants to wave to the crowd before a match, saying: 'I want to say goodbye. I didn't get the chance when I left the club last time.'
Keegan's family had previously requested privacy following his initial diagnosis. The former Liverpool and England star enjoyed a glittering career, winning multiple trophies including the European Cup and being named European Footballer of the Year twice.
