Graphic videos on social media show Queensland police shooting a pet dog after accidentally running it over in Mount Isa, as distressed residents look on. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Mill Crescent, where officers in a marked vehicle struck the dog, named Smokey, while leaving an address at low speed.
According to a Queensland police statement, the driver and passenger did not see the dog before impact. A supervising officer arrived within three minutes and found the dog showing signs of trauma and distress. The decision was made to euthanise the dog immediately to prevent further suffering.
Witnesses recorded the scene, capturing screams and shouts after shots were fired. One witness yelled, 'That was a pet! That was a fucking pet and youse ran over it!' The dog, lying motionless, was seen wagging its tail even after the second shot.
The dog's owner, a 15-year-old girl, and her grandmother, Sharlene Boddy, questioned why officers shot the dog instead of taking it to a vet. Police said body-worn camera footage was reviewed and confirmed the animal was significantly injured, with actions taken to prevent prolonged suffering.
RSPCA Queensland stated it was aware of the distressing footage and emphasised that any seriously injured animal should receive prompt assistance, with euthanasia carried out using a method that minimises pain, fear and distress. The incident has been criticised by animal rights groups.
