Conservative Media Mogul and Cheerleading Pioneer Jeff Webb Dies Aged 76
Jeff Webb, the conservative political activist widely regarded as Charlie Kirk's "mentor" and celebrated as the father of modern competitive cheerleading, has died at age 76. His death followed a tragic accident while playing pickleball that resulted in severe head trauma, according to multiple reports.
The Accident and Final Days
Webb sustained a severe head injury after falling during a pickleball game. He was rushed to hospital but never recovered. His family faced the heartbreaking decision to remove him from life support, as reported by Cheer Daily. Bill Seely, president of Varsity Spirit, confirmed the circumstances in an email obtained by the publication.
A Dual Legacy: Cheerleading and Conservative Media
Webb's professional life spanned two distinct worlds. He founded Varsity Spirit, which grew into the largest cheer organization in the United States, and later established Varsity Brands, a major sportswear company. A spokesperson for Varsity Brands stated: "Jeff played a pivotal role in shaping cheerleading as it exists today and in building a community that has impacted generations of athletes, coaches, and teams."
His influence extended globally, including work with the International Cheer Union, which achieved full recognition by the International Olympic Committee in 2021. Webb was instrumental in bringing cheerleading competitions to television screens across America.
Concurrently, Webb was a significant figure in conservative media. He co-published and edited the right-wing news site Human Events and purchased another conservative outlet, The Post Millennial, in 2022. In 2025, he sold both publications to Trump-loyalist John Solomon's media company, Just the News.
Connection to Charlie Kirk and Political Activism
Webb was deeply connected to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA. He frequently spoke about Kirk's impact, particularly after Kirk's assassination. "We may have lost a future president. Charlie Kirk had it all—charisma, faith, respect for everyone... Now, in his absence, tens of thousands of new chapters are rising. His legacy is just beginning," Webb told Real America's Voice shortly after the shooting.
Webb was present at the White House for the ceremony where Kirk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Turning Point USA released a statement honoring Webb: "In memory of Jeff Webb. A visionary who helped shape generations of young leaders and believed deeply in the power of community and country. A dear friend to Turning Point USA and Charlie. He will be greatly missed."
Personal Life and Public Perception
Webb lived a lavish lifestyle, reportedly owning a yacht in Florida, a private jet named "Cheer Force One," and a duck-hunting estate in Arkansas. The New York Times noted that his detractors described him as "John D. Rockefeller with glitter" and the "Dark Sith Lord."
Tributes and Legacy
John Solomon of Just the News paid tribute: "Jeff was a brilliant businessman and entrepreneur and a joyful warrior who made everyone around him better. He had a passion for ensuring America's next generations could carry on the torch of liberty, whether through the creation of the Varsity franchise or through his friendship with Charlie Kirk. He will be sorely missed."
Varsity Spirit honored him on Instagram: "Join us in honouring the life and legacy of Jeff Mr Webb, founder of Varsity Spirit and modern cheerleading. His impact has built a community that will continue to inspire generations to come."
Jeff Webb's death marks the end of an era for both the cheerleading world and conservative media circles, leaving behind a complex legacy of entrepreneurship, activism, and influence.
