Freddie Starr's body has been flown back to Britain after his death in Spain from a heart attack. The comedian, who was virtually penniless at the time of his death, faced the prospect of a pauper's funeral in Malaga.
However, funeral director Michael Fogg, a fan of the comic, stepped in to cover the cost of repatriation. Fogg described it as an 'honour' to help bring Starr back to the UK and is also assisting with funeral arrangements.
Starr had expressed a wish to be buried near his mother in Liverpool. The 76-year-old died at his home in Spain earlier this month.
The comedian had faced financial difficulties after a 2015 court case where he was found liable for groping a 15-year-old girl. To avoid paying legal fees, he liquidated his assets and moved to Spain.
His widow, Sophie, 38, has since alleged that Starr subjected her to physical and mental abuse during their marriage.
