FBI Director Kash Patel has reportedly ordered lie detector tests for over two dozen current and former security detail members and IT professionals in an attempt to identify leakers following an unflattering article in The Atlantic. Sources close to the situation claim that Patel is in a state of panic and has isolated himself from senior bureau leaders.
Patel's Reaction to The Atlantic Report
The Atlantic article, published last month, accused Patel of habitual excessive drinking and paranoia. In response, Patel filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against the publication and reportedly launched a criminal leak investigation, though the bureau denies these claims. FBI agents expressed concern about being asked to investigate a journalist's contacts for newsgathering, feeling that the request lacked a reasonable justification.
Bourbon Bottle Controversy
A follow-up report from The Atlantic alleged that Patel distributed custom bourbon bottles bearing his name and the FBI shield. The FBI denied this, stating that such practices are common and that Patel followed ethical guidelines. Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have since mocked Patel and called for an alcohol abuse test.
FBI spokesman Ben Williamson denied the allegations of panic, stating that Patel is in regular meetings and that the claims are false. Despite this, the polygraph orders have raised concerns about morale and the working environment within the bureau.
