Naheed Ejaz, the former mayor of Bracknell Forest, has been sentenced to three years in prison for helping her son cover up the rape of an unconscious teenage girl. The 61-year-old was found guilty of perverting the course of justice at Winchester Crown Court.
Her son, Diwan Khan, 41, raped the girl in his car in Hampshire in July 2024 after giving her vodka laced with MDMA. He was jailed for 12 years and given a five-year extended licence period. Khan was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for 20 years, an indefinite restraining order, and will be on the sex offenders register for life.
Ejaz stalled police when they arrived at her home to arrest Khan on September 12, 2024. Body-worn footage captured a conversation in Urdu between the two about hiding something. Despite multiple searches, Khan's phone has not been found.
Bracknell Forest Council confirmed that Khan acted as mayoral consort but conducted no civic functions in 2024. Ejaz's portrait has been removed from the gallery of former mayors. Council chief executive Susan Halliwell said: 'Our thoughts remain with the brave young girl whose life has been changed forever due to these heinous crimes.'
Detective Constable Lee Clement praised the victim's bravery, noting the attack continues to impact her mental health. He added: 'Khan targeted a vulnerable teenage girl, and then, along with his mother Ejaz, tried to cover up evidence to hinder our investigation.'
