Infantino Defends Football Integrity After Trump Call on Red Card

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a statement defending the independence of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee after US President Donald Trump admitted to personally asking for a review of a red card shown to US striker Folarin Balogun. Infantino emphasized that the committee's autonomy is essential to the credibility and integrity of football.

Trump Admits Calling Infantino Over Balogun Red Card

President Trump confirmed he had personally asked Infantino to review the red card shown to Balogun during the USA's World Cup win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. FIFA announced on Sunday, July 5, that the automatic one-match ban for Balogun's dismissal had been suspended, with Belgium—the USA's last-16 opponents—appealing the decision.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said: "I saw the play… that (challenge by Balogun) wasn't a foul, that wasn't even an infraction, that was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other." He added that if Balogun had been banned and the USA lost, he "would have felt Monday night's match against Belgium would have been rigged."

Infantino's Statement on Independence of Judicial Bodies

Following Trump's confirmation, Infantino released a lengthy statement explaining that he regularly talks with Trump, as he does with other world leaders, but stressed that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee operates independently. He said: "FIFA's judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them. Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected."

Infantino acknowledged receiving a call from Trump but stated he explained the ongoing legal process and that the case would be decided by the competent bodies. He added: "I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree. What I always do, however, is respect those decisions and the autonomy of the bodies that make them."

Political Interference Concerns

FIFA has strict rules against political interference in the affairs of its national associations. The suspension of Balogun's red card has drawn criticism from UEFA and the Belgium Football Association. The referee in question, Brazil's Raphael Claus, was described by Trump as "a little bit suspect." Trump said: "This referee… made a call that nobody could believe. He (Balogun) didn't do anything wrong and he's our best player, or one of our best players… and he gave him a red card."

Trump also commented on the upcoming match against Belgium: "The game tonight is going to be amazing. And we're going to have a full team, and Belgium is going to have a full team. And you know what? If (Belgium) beat us, then they can be really proud." He added that if Balogun had been banned and the USA lost, he would have called it "rigged, just like the election was rigged in 2020."

Impact on World Cup Integrity

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions around political influence in sports governance. Infantino's statement reinforces FIFA's position that judicial bodies must remain independent to maintain the integrity of competitions. The Disciplinary Committee's decision to suspend the ban while an appeal is processed has sparked debate, with Belgium's appeal still pending.
