A dramatic car explosion in Lower Manhattan sent locals and tourists sprinting for safety on Tuesday evening, as flames and thick smoke engulfed the streets near Wall Street's iconic Charging Bull. The incident occurred at approximately 5:42 PM near Broadway and Stone Street, directly in front of the MTA Headquarters.
Eyewitness Accounts and Footage
Video captured by onlookers showed a spectacular display of fire and smoke whipping through the sunny streets on one of the hottest days of the year in New York City. The footage revealed what appeared to be an MTA-affiliated vehicle, parked on the side of the road, suddenly bursting into flames. A photo shared online depicted the charred remains of the vehicle outside a Starbucks.
One Instagram user recounted witnessing the incident during his commute: "I walked by when it had just begun smoldering. Let's just say I didn't stick around to watch. Rather, I picked up my pace to the ferry. It was absolutely an MTA vehicle. Occurred across from the 4/5 station entrance at about 5:40 PM."
Emergency Response and Investigation
Firefighters from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) arrived promptly at the scene and managed to extinguish the raging fire by 7:00 PM, according to FDNY officials. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and no injuries were reported. The MTA confirmed to the Daily Mail that the vehicle was one of their own and that no employees were harmed in the incident.
The swift response by emergency services prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings or causing further damage. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
