Arsenal are set to receive a financial boost after Ethan Nwaneri's loan spell at Marseille resulted in a penalty for the French club due to insufficient playing time. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder joined Marseille in January on a loan deal that included a basic fee of approximately £1.3 million, with additional bonuses tied to his minutes on the pitch. However, Nwaneri managed only 412 minutes out of a possible 1,710 across all competitions, and was an unused substitute in five of Marseille's final six Ligue 1 matches.
Marseille Face Penalty
As part of the agreement, the less Nwaneri played, the more Marseille were required to pay. With his limited involvement, the French club now faces a financial penalty, though the exact terms remain confidential. Nwaneri will return to Arsenal this summer, but his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium is uncertain after Marseille head coach Habib Beye publicly questioned his commitment in training. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed hope that the youngster would learn from the challenging experience.
Fabio Vieira's Situation
Meanwhile, Bundesliga side Hamburger SV have decided not to trigger their £19.16 million (€22 million) option to buy Fabio Vieira. The 25-year-old midfielder had a slow start in Germany but became crucial in Hamburg's fight for survival, scoring seven Bundesliga goals and providing five assists. On the final day of the season, he scored a brilliant goal in a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.
Vieira, who joined Arsenal from FC Porto in 2022 for up to £35.2 million, is entering the final year of his contract. Arsenal are keen to sell him as he does not fit into Mikel Arteta's plans. Hamburg would prefer to pay under €10 million (£8.7 million) for a permanent deal, significantly less than the buy-option negotiated on transfer deadline day.
Arsenal anticipate interest from other clubs following Vieira's impressive season. Discussions about his future will occur after the Champions League final. Vieira himself stated, "I have to be open to everything. Let's see what happens." When asked about staying at Hamburg, he added, "I can't say that yet. No matter what the future brings, I was very happy here and will be forever grateful to the HSV."
