UK LGBTQ Support Drops, Poll Finds Growing Intolerance
UK LGBTQ Support Declines, Poll Shows Intolerance Rise

A recent poll has uncovered a worrying trend in the United Kingdom: support for LGBTQ rights is waning, and intolerance is on the rise. The survey, conducted by YouGov, indicates that while a majority of Britons still back equal rights, the proportion has fallen significantly over the past few years.

Key Findings

The poll shows that 68% of respondents support LGBTQ rights, down from 78% in 2021. This decline is particularly pronounced among younger age groups, with only 62% of 18-24 year olds expressing support, compared to 75% in 2021. Additionally, the number of people who say they are uncomfortable with same-sex relationships has risen to 22%, up from 14%.

Political Divides

The survey also highlights sharp political divides. Conservative voters are less likely to support LGBTQ rights (54%) compared to Labour (82%) and Liberal Democrat (89%) voters. Brexit Party supporters show the lowest support at 38%.

Generational Shift

Interestingly, older generations have become more supportive over time, while younger people have grown more ambivalent. Among those aged 65+, support rose from 55% in 2021 to 60% in 2026. Experts suggest this may be due to increased visibility of LGBTQ issues in media and public life.

Reasons for Decline

Campaigners point to several factors behind the drop. The rise of anti-trans rhetoric in public discourse, coupled with a backlash against gender identity education in schools, may have contributed. Some also cite economic uncertainty and a focus on other priorities as reasons for waning solidarity.

Regional Variations

Support varies across the UK. London remains the most supportive region (75%), while Northern Ireland shows the lowest (55%). Scotland and Wales fall in between, with 65% and 63% respectively.

Response from Advocacy Groups

LGBTQ advocacy groups have expressed concern. Stonewall’s chief executive said: “These findings are a stark reminder that progress cannot be taken for granted. We must redouble our efforts to foster understanding and acceptance.”

The government has been urged to take action, including updating hate crime laws and improving LGBTQ-inclusive education. However, some Conservative MPs have resisted such measures, arguing they infringe on parental rights.

The poll surveyed 5,000 adults across the UK between May 20-25, 2026, and has a margin of error of +/- 2%.
