Ultra-Marathon Runner's Tragic Death Weeks Before Wedding After 234-Mile Challenge

David Parrish, a 35-year-old ultra-marathon runner from Dumfries, tragically died last weekend while attempting a gruelling 234-mile challenge in the Scottish Highlands. The devastating news comes just three weeks before he was due to marry his partner of seven years, Jade Lau.

Remote Mountain Tragedy

Parrish was found dead in a remote mountainous area of Kintail in the north-west Highlands at approximately 10:25pm last Saturday. He had been attempting to set the fastest male completion time for the punishing Cape Wrath Trail, which stretches from Fort William to the far north of Scotland and is widely considered one of the United Kingdom's most demanding endurance challenges.

Police Scotland confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, though the exact cause has not been publicly disclosed. The former Royal Marine was an experienced ultra-distance runner who had previously completed the Cape Wrath Trail in 2023, winning the event and recording the second-fastest time on record.

Wedding Preparations Cut Short

In the weeks leading up to his final run, Parrish and his fiancée had been immersed in wedding preparations. The couple, who lived in Glasgow, were "putting together playlists" and writing speeches for their upcoming nuptials.

"So on receiving the news, I felt what I knew about the next couple of days, coming months, coming years, is quite scattered now," Lau told the BBC. "I'm trying to focus on the fact the world keeps moving, and I'll try to as well."

She described her late fiancée as "full of life, funny and loving" and said he had been excited in the weeks leading up to the challenge. The couple shared a deep love of the outdoors, often travelling to the Highlands in their van with their dog, Munro, for hiking and mountain running adventures. Parrish had even proposed to Lau during a walk in Glencoe.

A Tribute to a Fallen Friend

This year's Cape Wrath Trail attempt held special significance for Parrish, as he had dedicated the challenge to his close friend and fellow Royal Marine, Luke Ireland, who died aged 20 during a mountain run in 2014. Parrish had explained on his fundraising page how Ireland developed hypothermia after sudden weather changes, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

The fundraiser, supporting Scottish Mountain Rescue, has continued in Parrish's memory and has raised nearly £40,000 according to reports. Tributes have poured in from across the running community and beyond, with friends and fellow athletes remembering his extraordinary spirit and achievements.

Community Mourns a Talented Athlete

Parrish was a member of Dumfries Running Club and had been club champion in 2022. He began running seriously in his teens after leaving the Royal Marines. His running club described him as "an immensely talented runner and a wonderful person who will be sadly missed by all who knew him."

One friend said: "David leaves behind not only an extraordinary record of achievement but also a memory of how to carry great strength lightly. He'll be missed enormously." Another added: "A truly exceptional person with an incredibly positive outlook on life. You will be deeply missed."

Lau expressed her hope that Parrish would be remembered "for being a complete force of nature in spirit and ability." She noted that while she was "always cautious" about the challenges her fiancée embarked on, she was "always very proud and confident of his abilities as well."
