The Department for Transport has confirmed that UK Blue Badges are now recognised in Italy, following a mutual agreement between the two countries. The change, announced on October 28, means disabled drivers can use their parking permits in Italy, including access to restricted traffic zones (ZTL).
Agreement Announced by Officials
The update was shared on the Government's guidance page for using a Blue Badge in Europe. Italy's Minister for Disabilities, Alessandra Locatelli, described the agreement as an 'important step forward'. In a statement on the ministry's website, she said: "The parking permit issued by the United Kingdom for parking and access to restricted traffic zones (ZTL), the Parking Card for Persons with Disabilities (Blue Badge), is finally recognized in Italy. I am very pleased with the agreement reached and the solution found by our countries; this is an important step forward in fostering mobility and independence for persons with disabilities."
She added: "We will continue working to ensure maximum accessibility for everyone in our country and to protect all the rights of persons with disabilities, including when they travel."
Benefits for Blue Badge Holders
Roads Minister Justin Madders said: "Disabled people shouldn't have to worry about whether their parking permit will be recognised when travelling abroad. These new arrangements with Italy mean Blue Badge holders can relax and enjoy their trip, with easier access to reserved parking and exemptions from charges, whether they're travelling for a holiday, visiting family or for work."
According to the Department for Transport, the majority of European nations openly accept the British Blue Badge, although a handful of destinations have either limited regional recognition or strict local conditions. France, Germany and Portugal are among the countries which accept a UK Blue Badge. In Spain, guidance varies depending on the region, and as of the start of this year the government was working with Spanish officials to come to an agreement.
