Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly denied claims by former US President Donald Trump that she begged him for a photo at the recent G7 summit in Evian, France. In a social media video, Meloni stated, 'Neither I nor Italy ever beg,' and expressed astonishment at what she called 'completely made up' statements.
Trump's Alleged Remarks
Trump told Italian broadcaster La7 that Meloni 'begged' for a picture, saying, 'She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.' The comments sparked a new transatlantic dispute.
Italy's Response
Meloni responded with a video clip, declaring her surprise and disappointment. 'I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies. It is not the first time,' she said, adding that Trump shows more leniency toward adversaries.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled his planned trip to the US on June 21-22, stating on X that Trump's 'serious and offensive words' offend all of Italy.
The incident marks another tense moment in US-Italy relations during the G7 summit, where leaders gathered to discuss global issues.
