Gina Carano Speaks Out Ahead of Historic MMA Return Against Ronda Rousey

As Gina Carano connects via video call, she marks her 44th birthday in quiet reflection. Seated calmly in a simply decorated room, wearing a black jumper, the mixed martial arts trailblazer appears remarkably at peace. This serenity comes despite the turbulent journey that has led her to this moment – a return to professional fighting after seventeen years away from the cage.

A Decade of Transformation and Turmoil

The period following Carano's retirement from MMA in 2009 saw her transition successfully into acting, with notable roles in Fast & Furious 6, Deadpool, and the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. However, her career trajectory shifted dramatically in 2021 when Lucasfilm, a Disney subsidiary, terminated her contract following a controversial social media post.

The studio accused Carano of posting content that "denigrated people based on their cultural and religious identities," describing it as "abhorrent and unacceptable." This dismissal sparked a legal battle that would define the next chapter of her life.

Elon Musk's Unexpected Intervention

In 2024, Carano filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful termination and sex discrimination. Enter billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who had pledged legal support to individuals he believed were "unfairly treated" for their posts on his platform, X. Musk's legal team took on Carano's case, ultimately reaching a settlement last year that allowed her to move forward.

"When you feel like something unjust happens to you, you wonder if justice will ever come," Carano reflects. "Getting that call from Elon Musk's lawyers gave me a surge of energy. It helped me realize I needed to jump back into life and get healthy."

The Comeback Fight Seventeen Years in the Making

With the legal chapter closed, Carano now prepares for an extraordinary athletic challenge: facing fellow MMA pioneer Ronda Rousey on May 16th in a bout that will stream live on Netflix. This marks Carano's first professional fight since 2009 and Rousey's first in a decade.

"Saying yes to this fight gave me something to look forward to, even during the lawsuit," Carano explains. "It pushed me to where I am today – the best place I've ever been in my life. Once again, MMA has come in and saved the day."

Rediscovering Martial Arts as Therapy

Carano describes her relationship with martial arts as profoundly therapeutic. "I never let it go until five years ago, and strangely enough, that's when my life started falling apart," she reveals. "Martial arts to me is like somebody else's yoga or therapy. It helped me when I was twenty-one, and here it is today, changing my life again."

She emphasizes that this discipline has become a permanent part of her identity. "It's been a love story. I'm never letting it go again. The timing of this fight feels almost magical."

Seeing Ronda Rousey in a New Light

Despite Rousey's reputation as an abrasive figure in MMA circles, Carano discovered a different person when they met to discuss their upcoming bout. "When I talked to Ronda about this fight and met her in person, I was really confused," Carano admits. "She's nothing like what the internet says."

Carano expresses admiration for Rousey's advocacy for fighter pay and her authentic passion. "What she's trying to fight for – fighter pay – it's a beautiful thing. I have so much respect for her. Ronda is a force to be reckoned with."

Looking Beyond the Cage: A Return to Storytelling

With the fight approaching, Carano already envisions her next chapter: a return to acting. "Hopefully some storytelling, because I feel like I have some unfinished business," she shares. "I don't think I've even tapped into the talent that I have in storytelling. It's one of the most powerful things you can do."

She sees this period as the beginning of a transformed self. "It feels like the start of a new me, even compared to six months ago. I understand the process now. You get hurt, you feel that hurt; you pick yourself up, figure out what's going to make you tick and work."
