The federal government has officially banned the neo-Nazi organisation known as Whites Australia under tough new hate crime laws, in a major crackdown on far-right extremism.
Announcement of the Ban
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced on Friday that the group, which has also operated under the names the European Australian Movement and the National Socialist Network, had been listed as a prohibited hate organisation under changes to the Criminal Code.
Implications of the Prohibition
This designation makes it illegal to be a member of, or to provide support to, the organisation. The move is part of a broader effort by the Australian government to combat the rise of far-right extremism and hate speech. The new hate crime laws provide authorities with greater powers to target groups that promote racial hatred and violence.
The ban reflects a growing concern over the activities of neo-Nazi groups in Australia, which have been linked to an increase in hate crimes and extremist propaganda. By listing Whites Australia as a prohibited organisation, the government aims to dismantle its operational capabilities and deter others from joining or supporting similar groups.
Government's Stance on Extremism
Minister Burke emphasised that the government will not tolerate organisations that incite hatred and division. He stated that the ban sends a clear message that such extremist ideologies have no place in Australian society. The government continues to monitor other far-right groups and may take further action if necessary.
