Noelia Castillo Ramos, a 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, has disclosed her three heartfelt final wishes ahead of her scheduled euthanasia procedure. The young woman, who has endured immense suffering, is set to undergo assisted dying later today following a protracted legal battle that reached the highest courts.
A Life Marred by Trauma and Legal Struggles
Noelia's journey to this point has been fraught with pain and adversity. She described being placed in government care at the age of 13 due to dysfunctional and neglectful parenting. Her life took a devastating turn when she was sexually assaulted multiple times, with the most harrowing incident being a gang rape by three males during her teenage years.
In a desperate attempt to escape her anguish, Noelia survived a suicide attempt by falling from a height, which left her paralysed as a paraplegic. Since then, she has lived with constant physical pain and severe mental trauma, which she characterised as "intolerable and unbearable." In her public statements, Noelia expressed a desire to die with dignity, emphasising her wish to "leave in peace" after years of relentless suffering.
Legal Battles and Family Dynamics
Noelia's path to euthanasia was not straightforward. Initially scheduled for 2024, the procedure was blocked when her father, Geronimo, initiated a legal case to prevent it. However, both Spanish courts and the European Court of Human Rights ultimately upheld her right to assisted dying, affirming her autonomy in this deeply personal decision.
The family dynamics surrounding Noelia's choice have been complex and emotionally charged. She has been openly critical of her father, questioning his motives. "He never calls or writes to me," Noelia told the programme Y ahora Sonsoles. "Why does he want me alive, to keep me in a hospital?" In contrast, her mother, Yolanda, has stated that while she does not agree with the decision, she will stand by her daughter's side until the final stages of the procedure.

In her last public comments, Noelia outlined three specific wishes for her final moments:
- To wear a beautiful dress and makeup, seeking a sense of dignity and peace in her appearance.

Noelia reflected on the broader family implications, noting, "None of my family is in favour of euthanasia. Obviously, because I'm another pillar of the family. I'm leaving, and you're staying here with all the pain. But I think, all the pain I've suffered over the years... I just want to leave in peace now and stop suffering, period." She added, "And a father's, or a mother's, or a sister's happiness doesn't have to come before a daughter's happiness or sadness of a daughter's life."
