Ed Miliband Frontrunner for Chancellor After Unison Backing

Ed Miliband has emerged as the leading candidate to become chancellor under a potential Andy Burnham government, following a major endorsement from the head of Britain's largest trade union, Unison. The Energy Secretary's chances soared after Andrea Egan publicly backed him over rival Wes Streeting, a contender from the party's Right.

Unison Backing Boosts Miliband's Campaign

Andrea Egan, Unison's general secretary, stated: "Andy Burnham has a historic opportunity to rebuild our country in the interests of workers and communities, but that chance will be squandered if his government is made up of politicians determined to continue the same failed approach. We need a chancellor who will rewire the economy and properly invest to improve the lives of the majority. Of those reported to be in the running, only Ed Miliband could enact the kinds of policies trade unions and our members urgently need."

This endorsement comes days after Burnham declared his intention to run for prime minister following Sir Keir Starmer's resignation. The former Manchester mayor quickly became the frontrunner to replace Starmer, even before winning the Makerfield by-election.

Burnham's Cabinet Speculation Intensifies

Speculation has been rife about who Burnham will include in his cabinet, with Miliband seen as a favourite due to his close ties to the Burnham campaign. Burnham is expected to deliver a speech in Manchester on Monday, outlining more of his economic plans. Commentators suggest his choice for chancellor will be his most significant decision.

However, there are efforts to block Miliband. A senior union official told the Financial Times: "There are ongoing discussions to try to stop Ed Miliband. There is a GMB-Unite axis on this."

Leadership Timeline Confirmed

Labour's ruling body confirmed on Thursday that a new leader would be announced on July 17 if only one candidate stands. Burnham is reportedly assembling his top team, with no serious challenge expected.

Current Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to be replaced as part of the leadership transition.
