Woman Found After 24 Years Arrested on Old DUI Charge

A woman who vanished for 24 years and was recently discovered leading a new life has been arrested over a decades-old driving while impaired charge. Michele Hundley Smith was 38 years old when she left her home in Eden, North Carolina, to go Christmas shopping across the border in Martinsville, Virginia, on December 9, 2001.

Decades of Mystery and a Sudden Arrest

She never returned home, sparking a long-standing missing person case that baffled authorities and devastated her family. Recently, she was found alive and well living at an undisclosed location in North Carolina, which she requested police keep confidential, even from her anguished relatives.

Outstanding Warrant from 2001

However, her rediscovery led to an arrest last night for a November 11, 2001, charge of driving while impaired, which has remained outstanding since she disappeared on December 9, according to Rockingham County court records first revealed by the Daily Mail. Smith failed to appear for her December 27, 2001, court date, having already gone missing, prompting an arrest warrant that stayed active until officers finally located her.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

Robeson County officers arrested Smith, now 62, on behalf of Rockingham County at an address in Saint Pauls, nearly three hours from the Stoneville home she vanished from. She appeared before Robeson County Magistrate Singh and was granted bond on the condition she attend a March 26 court hearing in Rockingham County, police confirmed.

In a mugshot obtained by the Daily Mail, Smith appears markedly different from the glamorous photos circulated on missing posters during her disappearance. Her once-dark hair is now grey and tied back, reflecting the passage of time.

No Charges for Disappearance

Despite the arrest, Smith will face no charges related to her 24-year disappearance. Katy Gregg, District Attorney for Caswell and Rockingham County, told the Daily Mail that after meeting with detectives on Tuesday and reviewing their investigation, it was decided no charges would be filed. "I support their decision," said Gregg.

Bond and Release

The mother-of-three was bonded out of Robeson County jail this morning on a $2,000 bond, as shown in court records obtained by the Daily Mail. Her case has shocked many across America, highlighting the complexities of long-term missing person investigations and unresolved legal matters.
