US Family Flees Trump, AI Picks Torquay for UK Move

American Family Chooses Torquay After AI Chatbot Suggests Devon Escape from Trump Era

A family from the United States has made the dramatic decision to leave America behind, citing the overwhelming political climate under Donald Trump's administration as their primary motivation. Their destination? The picturesque seaside town of Torquay in Devon, England—a recommendation that came not from travel agents or friends, but from the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

From Florida Sunshine to the English Riviera

Ashley Anne O'Brien, a contract manager residing in Cocoa Beach, Florida, alongside her British husband and their two teenage children, found herself increasingly anxious about life in America. With her husband hailing originally from Walsall in Staffordshire, the family had long considered moving to the UK to connect the children with their paternal heritage. However, the sheer number of potential locations across Britain left them feeling paralysed by choice.

"By using ChatGPT it assisted with narrowing down the scope as opposed to just sitting on Wikipedia and reading about town after town," Ashley explained. The family input their specific criteria into the AI software: a tourist-friendly town with proximity to water, a relatively warm climate, and amenities such as theatres and tennis courts.

ChatGPT's Top Ten and the Torquay Triumph

The AI responded with a list of ten potential locations, predominantly within Devon, including Sidmouth, Exmouth, and Torquay. Upon researching Torquay, Ashley was immediately captivated. The town's beachfront, combined with nearby attractions like Kents Cavern, Babbacombe Model Village, and the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, sealed the deal.

"It's a larger town compared to Sidmouth and Exmouth and they seem to have more amenities due to having more people," she noted. Her husband's fond memories of visiting Torquay further solidified their choice. The family now plans to relocate by the end of summer, with an ambitious goal of purchasing and operating a bed and breakfast.

Dreaming of a Quieter, More Hopeful Life

The envisioned new life is a stark contrast to their current reality. Ashley described a profound desire for normality, free from the constant stress of American political developments. "I just want to breathe," she expressed. "I want my children to worry about gossip, bad haircuts and sports, not regular active shooter drills in school."

She listed a cascade of events from the past year that contributed to their decision to leave, including government service cuts, controversial foreign policy actions, and domestic upheavals. "It is too much. An inundation of events and decisions that overwhelm and stress everyone out," Ashley stated.

Her aspiration is to trade these macro anxieties for local concerns. "I want to worry about rights of way and litter and children speeding on e-bikes and how long it takes for local permits—things that might be considered boring but that's what I wish for my family."

Building Bridges with the Torquay Community

In preparation for their move, potentially as early as July, Ashley has proactively joined several local Torquay groups on Facebook. This digital reconnaissance mission aims to immerse the family in community life before they even arrive.

"I joined groups on Facebook so I can hear more about the local community and understand what are the things they are annoyed with and what kind of festivals they are having," she said. "That's so now I can just see what their lives are like."

The transition represents both an adventure and a profound new beginning. "It feels like an adventure but also feels like a new part of our life is going to start and that's really amazing," Ashley reflected. With hopes of her husband mastering the full English breakfast and herself baking fresh bread and muffins for guests, the O'Brien family is trading political turmoil for the promise of a hopeful, beautiful life on the Devon coast.
