Paedophile Stabs Throat Outside Police Station After Online Sting Exposes Crimes

Stephen McLoughlin, a 59-year-old man from Merseyside, has been sentenced to four years in prison after stabbing himself in the throat outside a police station. The dramatic incident occurred after he was exposed by an online group for sending sexually explicit messages to profiles he believed belonged to schoolgirls.

Online Sting Operation Uncovered Grooming Attempts

McLoughlin, from Kirkby, Merseyside, communicated for several months with two online accounts he thought were "Maddie", aged 13, and "Summer", aged 12. In reality, he was interacting with TFN, a group that identifies internet users with a sexual interest in underage children to expose them to authorities.

The court heard that McLoughlin, a married butcher with no prior convictions, turned conversations highly inappropriate quickly. He told "Maddie" how beautiful she was before making sexually explicit remarks and repeatedly discussed meeting in person. One message asked, "should we have sex if we meet up?" He also warned her that if her mother saw the messages, he would go to prison.

Violent Self-Harm Incident Captured on Video

On August 26, 2022, after being confronted by the online group, McLoughlin was filmed outside Kirkby police station pulling a knife from his car and stabbing his own throat. The viral video showed him being punched to the side of the head while still holding the knife before collapsing. Screams could be heard as someone called for an ambulance.

Prosecutor Callum Stevens noted the "unfortunate circumstances" of the bladed article offence, while defence barrister Suzanne Payne stated McLoughlin intended to harm himself, not others, seeing it as "the only way out for him and his family."

Court Proceedings and Sentencing Details

Following a six-day trial at Bolton Crown Court in February, McLoughlin was convicted of:

  • Attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming
  • Attempting to cause or engage a girl aged 13-15 in sexual activity
  • Two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child
  • Possession of a bladed article in a public place

Judge Jeremy Lasker acknowledged McLoughlin's "regret and shame" but noted that conviction after trial offered little mitigation. The defendant, who appeared via video link from HMP Altcourse, occasionally wiped his eyes during proceedings.

Sentenced to four years, McLoughlin will serve approximately 40% before release on licence. He also received an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and thanked the judge after learning his sentence, with family members present in court.

Aftermath and Personal Impact

The case has taken a significant toll on McLoughlin's mental health and his family's wellbeing. Defence barrister Suzanne Payne explained that after his arrest in August 2022, he lost his job as a butcher at a large firm and became a recluse.

"While on bail he did not go out of the house, did not socialise, did not answer the door," she said. "He was reluctant to even go into the back garden because of concern for the safety of his family since his name and face was broadcast on the internet." Police even installed a special device on his letterbox to prevent petrol being poured through.

In prison, McLoughlin has started using education and therapy services and recently obtained a job in the library, though he rarely leaves his cell due to safety fears. He has vowed to never own a computer again.
