Disturbing Bodycam Footage Released After NFL Star's Death in Police Custody
Oakland police have released horrifying body camera and surveillance footage showing the violent arrest of former NFL running back Doug Martin, months after his tragic death while in police custody. The disturbing video, first published by TMZ and NBC Bay Area, captures the chaotic final moments before the 36-year-old athlete's untimely demise.
Chaotic Arrest Footage Emerges
The newly released police footage shows Martin behaving erratically and breaking through a fence at a residence in the Oakland Hills neighborhood. As officers approach, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star can be heard yelling loudly before becoming increasingly agitated while resisting arrest. At one point in the video, Martin is seen running into a backyard and breaking a window before ultimately being handcuffed in a home gym.
Tragically, Martin became unresponsive while in police custody and was later pronounced dead, according to official statements from authorities. The incident occurred in October 2025, but the footage has only now been made public, raising serious questions about police procedures during mental health crises.
Family Sought Help for Mental Health Crisis
Martin's worried family had called 911 that evening to report that the former athlete was experiencing a severe mental health episode. "Doug's parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and contacted local authorities for support," explained Martin's agent, Brian Murphy, in a statement released after the tragedy.
Murphy detailed how Martin had been battling mental health issues prior to his death, stating: "Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor's residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police."
Investigation and CTE Concerns
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Martin's death is currently underway. The family has retained prominent civil rights attorney John Burris, who told Oaklandside.com that they are awaiting test results before considering legal action against the police department.
"I'm not presuming in this case that legal action needs to be taken until we've reviewed all the reports," Burris stated. "Was it a medical condition? CTE? The police? While we wait for the investigation to be completed, the cause of death is still unclear."
Burris' mention of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) is particularly significant. The degenerative brain disease, which can only be diagnosed after death, has been linked to numerous suicides among former NFL players including Junior Seau, Aaron Hernandez and Dave Duerson. Martin's family quickly donated his body to the Boston University CTE Center following his passing.
Questions About Police Procedures
When questioned about the officers' conduct during Martin's arrest, Burris expressed uncertainty about whether misconduct occurred. "I did see a compilation or summary of the videos, but that doesn't give you enough perspective on whether there was misconduct on the part of the officers," he explained.
The attorney did voice frustration with the slow pace of the police investigation, noting: "It's disappointing to me that it's taking this long, but for a high-profile case such as this, it's not surprising."

Doug Martin had an impressive NFL career that began when he was selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Stockton, California native played college football at Boise State after attending St. Mary's High School.
During his professional career, Martin accumulated 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns, along with 148 receptions for another 1,207 yards and two additional scores. His athletic achievements now stand in stark contrast to the tragic circumstances of his final moments, captured forever in police footage that raises difficult questions about mental health crises and law enforcement responses.
