A savvy mother from Stoke-on-Trent has revealed how she makes her son's school lunch for just 15p a day by batch cooking nutritious meals at home.
Stephie Lehrle, who previously spent £2 a day on pasta pots from the school canteen, now prepares 20 servings at a time with ingredients costing £3. She has also taught her son how to cook his own meals, saving £37 every four weeks during term-time.
Sharing her money-saving idea on Facebook's Family Lowdown Tips & Ideas group, Stephie wrote: 'So tonight teaching my son the art of batch cooking... As OUR school meals are not particularly nutritious or cost effective.' Her post attracted more than 7,400 likes and 1,200 comments from other parents praising the idea.
Batch cooking is a popular method for saving cash, with other parents like Donna Steed from Aberdeen slashing £50 off her weekly shopping bill by freezing multiple meals. Mary Bells, who feeds her family of four for just £47 a month, urges others to 'batch cook the h*** out of life!'
