A Labour MP has called on the Home Office to revoke the visa of US live-streamer Hasan Piker, who is scheduled to speak at London SXSW in early June. David Taylor, MP for Hemel Hempstead, argued that Mr Piker's presence would be 'not conducive to the public good' due to his controversial remarks.
Controversial Comments
Mr Piker, a prominent online personality, has faced significant backlash for past statements, including claiming that 'America deserved 9/11' and declaring he would vote for Hamas over Israel. These comments have sparked widespread criticism from Jewish community groups and politicians alike.
Community Concerns
The Jewish community group CST also urged organisers to 'act responsibly,' asserting that the UK should not serve as a platform for individuals who spread hatred or legitimise extremism. They emphasised the need to uphold community safety and cohesion.
SXSW London's Response
In response to the growing calls, SXSW London issued a statement explaining its position. The organisers noted that the festival provides a platform for open exchange and features a wide range of speakers. They clarified that inclusion in the programme does not imply endorsement of all affiliations or views held by the speakers.
The Home Office has yet to comment on the matter, but the debate highlights ongoing tensions around free speech, public safety, and the hosting of controversial figures in the UK.
