Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near the southern Greek island of Crete overnight Wednesday into Thursday, detaining crews and sparking international condemnation. The flotilla, which set sail from Barcelona, aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and highlight the living conditions of Palestinians under the ongoing blockade.
Details of the Interception
Organisers reported that over 70 boats and 1,000 participants were involved in the mission. Israel's Foreign Ministry stated that about 175 activists from over 20 boats were being taken to Israel. The operation occurred amidst a fragile ceasefire in Gaza, where residents continue to face severe shortages due to the blockade enforced since 2007.
International Reaction
Turkey's foreign ministry condemned the seizure as an “act of piracy” and a violation of international law. Activists in Greece planned protest rallies in response to the incident. The flotilla interception follows a similar thwarted attempt in 2025, highlighting ongoing tensions over the blockade.
The Global Sumud Flotilla was organized to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to challenge the Israeli naval blockade. Participants included activists from various countries, and the flotilla carried medical supplies, food, and other essential goods. The Israeli military stated that the flotilla was diverted to prevent a breach of the blockade, which it deems necessary for security reasons.
