US Immigration Authorities Demand Virginia Governor Keep Murder Suspects in Custody

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a direct appeal to Virginia's newly elected liberal governor, urging her administration not to release illegal migrants who have been charged with murder. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed this week that ICE has filed two separate arrest detainers for suspects from Guatemala currently held in Fairfax County.

Two Murder Cases Prompt ICE Intervention

The first detainer involves Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, a thirty-eight-year-old man arrested for second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing incident in Fairfax County. According to DHS officials, Chavarria Muy was taken into custody on Monday in connection with a killing that occurred the previous day. The agency confirmed he is in the United States illegally, though his exact entry details remain unknown.

A second detainer was issued the following day for Misael Lopez Gomez, twenty-eight, who allegedly murdered his three-month-old daughter last month. Police reports indicate Lopez Gomez told authorities he illegally crossed the southern border near Albuquerque, New Mexico, in July 2023. His arrest came after emergency responders found his infant daughter unresponsive at a Bailey's Crossroads residence, with hospital staff noting signs of abuse.

DHS Official Calls for Cooperation

Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis made a public appeal to Governor Abigail Spanberger, emphasizing the need for collaboration between federal immigration authorities and state officials. 'We need cooperation from sanctuary politicians to stop criminals from being released from jail to perpetrate more crimes and create more innocent victims,' Bis stated during a press briefing.

Both suspects are currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center while ICE seeks to ensure they remain in custody rather than being released back into the community. The DHS specifically requested that 'sanctuary politicians not release him from jail without notification to ICE.'

Additional Cases Highlight Pattern

This week's detainers follow several other recent cases that have drawn ICE's attention to Virginia's immigration enforcement policies. Earlier this month, authorities issued a detainer for Israel Christopher Flores-Ortiz, a nineteen-year-old from El Salvador arrested on nine counts of assault and battery for allegedly groping multiple girls at a Virginia high school.

In February, ICE similarly requested that Sierra Leonean illegal migrant Abdul Jalloh remain in custody. Jalloh, thirty-two, was arrested in connection with the murder of Stephanie Minter, a forty-one-year-old woman found dead at a Fairfax County bus stop with multiple stab wounds. According to DHS records, Jalloh has accumulated more than thirty arrests for various offenses including rape, assault, and drug possession.

Political Context and Criticism

Governor Spanberger, who made history as Virginia's first female governor when she took office in January, has faced increasing criticism from federal immigration authorities. The DHS has accused her administration of continuing to 'allow the release of pedophiles, rapists, gang members, and murderers onto Virginia's streets.'

Bis specifically referenced what she called 'open-border policies' that she believes have contributed to preventable tragedies. 'This monster should have never been allowed in our country by the Biden administration,' she remarked regarding Lopez Gomez's case, while describing Flores-Ortiz as 'this 19-year-old criminal illegal alien' who shouldn't have been attending a Virginia high school.

The ongoing tension highlights the broader national debate about immigration enforcement, sanctuary policies, and cooperation between different levels of government. As these cases proceed through the legal system, ICE officials emphasize their commitment to ensuring dangerous individuals remain in custody regardless of their immigration status.
