ICE Arrests Wisconsin Mosque Leader with Ties to Congresswoman and Alleged Hamas Groups
Federal immigration authorities have apprehended the leader of Wisconsin's largest mosque, a figure previously connected to Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib and organizations allegedly associated with Hamas. Salah Salem Sarsour, a 53-year-old Jordanian national, was taken into custody by the Department of Homeland Security in a targeted operation conducted in Milwaukee earlier this week.
Terrorist Conviction and Immigration Fraud Allegations
According to federal officials, Sarsour is a convicted terrorist who allegedly provided false information on his green card application when he entered the United States over three decades ago. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated in an official announcement, "Salah Salem Sarsour is a terrorist convicted for throwing Molotov cocktails at the homes of Israeli armed forces. This illegal alien from Jordan lied on his green card application to gain legal status in the US."
Bis further emphasized the administration's stance, declaring, "Thanks to President Trump and ICE, this terrorist is out of American communities. This Administration will always put the safety of the American people FIRST and Make America Safe Again."
Political Connections and Community Role
Sarsour serves as president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee and maintains a prominent position as both a community leader and businessman. The Daily Mail previously reported that he co-hosted a campaign event for Representative Rashida Tlaib during her 2018 congressional campaign. Tlaib, elected in 2019 as one of the first two Muslim women in Congress, is a Detroit native of Palestinian heritage who has been a vocal critic of the Israeli government.
In 2023, House members attempted to censure Tlaib for expressing pro-Palestinian views, highlighting the controversial nature of her political positions. Sarsour's arrest brings renewed attention to these connections and the broader political implications.
Historical Allegations of Terror Financing
Federal authorities have previously accused Sarsour of raising funds for the Holy Land Foundation of Relief and Development, an organization that was raided by federal agents in 2001 for allegedly funneling $12 million to Hamas. According to an FBI memorandum from that year, five HLF leaders were convicted and sentenced to federal prison for their involvement in the scheme. Notably, Sarsour was never formally charged in relation to these terror financing allegations.
Defense Claims of Targeting and Torture
The Muslim Legal Fund of America, which is representing Sarsour, maintains that he is a lawful permanent resident who has lived in the United States for over 32 years. They argue that he is being targeted due to his Palestinian and Muslim background, describing him as a law-abiding Milwaukee business owner.
Othman Atta, executive director of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, told the New York Times that Sarsour was arrested as a teenager in the West Bank and subjected to brutal torture by Israeli Defense Forces. "He had been arrested, and this is something that he talked about quite a bit — how he was abused and tortured while in custody," Atta explained, noting that Sarsour was held for approximately two years without understanding the charges against him, as they were presented in Hebrew.
The Islamic Society of Milwaukee issued a statement denouncing the allegations as fraudulent, describing Sarsour's conviction as occurring in an "Israeli-military kangaroo court" without proper legal procedures or due process protections.
Community Outrage and Family Response
Sarsour's arrest has sparked significant outrage within his community, with crowds gathering at a rally to demand his release. His son, Kareem Sarsour, spoke emotionally at the gathering, describing his father as "the person you called if you had a problem."
The family emphasizes that Sarsour grew up in the Occupied West Bank and moved to the United States after marriage, where he raised six children who are all American citizens. They view his story as an immigrant success narrative that should be celebrated rather than demonized.
According to the Muslim Legal Fund of America, Sarsour was pulled over by ten ICE agents while driving, then transported to a detention facility in Chicago before being transferred to a center in Indiana. The organization warned that "structural racism against Palestinians and Muslims, especially immigrants, weakens our democracy and erodes human rights for all."
The Daily Mail has reached out to Representative Tlaib's office for additional comment regarding her connections to Sarsour and the ongoing case.
