Simon Dobbin, a father-of-three and star of the BBC television programme DIY SOS, was allegedly "kicked like a football" during a horrific attack that ultimately led to his death, a court has heard. The tragic incident, which occurred in March 2015, left Mr. Dobbin with permanent brain damage, rendering him unable to walk or talk.
The Brutal Assault and Its Aftermath
The attack took place after Mr. Dobbin, a devoted Cambridge United supporter, attended a football match between Cambridge United and Southend United. He was set upon by a group of twelve men in a violent assault that lasted approximately ninety seconds. This brutal beating caused severe and irreversible injuries, profoundly altering his life.
Legal Proceedings Unfold
In a significant development, eleven men, ranging in age from 29 to 49, have appeared in court charged with manslaughter in connection with Mr. Dobbin's death. The defendants named are Greg Allen, 37, Jamie Chambers, 33, Louise Courtnell, 43, Philip McGill, 40, Scott Nicholls, 49, Matthew Petchey, 35, Rhys Pullen, 29, Thomas Randall, 31, Michael Shawyer, 40, Alexander Woods, 33, and James Woods, 33.
Additionally, a twelfth man, 40-year-old Ryan Carter, faced magistrates in a separate hearing yesterday, also on a charge of manslaughter. All twelve individuals were formally charged on October 21st, 2020, the very day of Simon Dobbin's passing.
Court Hearings and Bail Conditions
During proceedings at Colchester Magistrates Court, the accused were granted unconditional bail. The case is scheduled to proceed to a further hearing at Basildon Crown Court on May 1st, where more detailed legal arguments are expected to be presented.

In a heartfelt statement after his death, Nicola Dobbin expressed her profound grief, saying, "I lost my gentle giant, words cannot express the loss I’m feeling. I’m thankful for the fantastic memories I have, he fought so very hard to be with his family."
She added, "Sadly his heart wasn’t strong enough, but he is now at peace and will be forever in my heart." This poignant tribute underscores the deep personal loss felt by his family and the community that rallied around him during his difficult years.
