Brit Left with £23,000 Medical Bill After Thailand Bike Crash
Brit's £23k Thailand Bike Crash Bill

A British man faces a £23,000 medical bill after a horrific motorbike crash just six days into a dream trip to Thailand. Jude O'Connor's two-month journey was cut short when another rider pulled out in front of him, throwing him into a parked car.

Serious Injuries and Insurance Shock

Jude suffered a broken shoulder, broken arm, broken nose, and a shattered elbow. He was rushed to hospital and told he urgently needed surgery. However, his travel insurance refused to cover the costs due to an exclusion he was unaware of: his policy only covered motorbikes up to 50cc, but he was riding a 125cc bike, the smallest commonly available in Thailand.

Private Surgery and Family Strain

With no other option, Jude underwent private surgery, spending nearly two weeks in a Thai hospital. His parents had to fly out to bring him home. The total medical bill reached £23,000, which his parents had to borrow, placing immense financial strain on the family.

Jude said: “This left us with no choice but to go ahead with essential surgery privately. I spent nearly two weeks in hospital in Thailand with my parents, having to fly out to bring me home. This was an extremely difficult process with trying to get my Fit-To-Fly form and the Surgeon’s approval.”

Return to the UK and Ongoing Recovery

The crash occurred in March, and Jude returned to the UK in April. He has since undergone further complex reconstructive surgery and faces up to a year of intense physiotherapy. He set up a GoFundMe page with a target of £17,500 to ease the financial burden on his family.

Jude said: “I feel incredibly guilty that they’ve been put in this position because of my accident, and this is my way of trying to give something back to them.”

Raising Awareness

Motorbike accidents are a major safety concern in Thailand, with 14,000 to 15,000 annual deaths. Jude hopes his story will encourage other travellers to check their insurance thoroughly. He said: “I also want to raise awareness so others double-check their insurance when travelling, as I believed I was fully covered and found out too late that I wasn’t. I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through this.”
