Starmer 'may axe Type 83 destroyers' amid Royal Navy downsizing fears
Starmer may axe Type 83 destroyers amid Navy downsizing fears

A former Royal Navy commander has voiced concerns over reports that Sir Keir Starmer could cancel a new fleet of warships. Tom Sharpe, who served for 27 years and commanded four vessels, believes ministers may opt for the "cheapest option" rather than the best one regarding the Type 83 destroyer programme.

Type 83 destroyers under threat

Reports indicate the Prime Minister is considering scrapping plans to build the Type 83 destroyers, which are intended to replace the current Type 45s in the next decade. Sharpe expressed a "55-45" preference for proceeding with the ships, which could cost around £2 billion each.

He noted that while a drone could potentially perform the advanced radar functions expected of the Type 83, having a manned ship ensures commanders remain "in charge of their own destiny." Sharpe added, "We will choose the cheapest option, not the best one, guaranteed."

Funding disputes and delays

The Type 83 programme may fall victim to the delayed Defence Investment Plan (DIP). Senior military officials suggest the project could be postponed or axed to accommodate other priorities like drones, as reported by The Telegraph. The programme has reportedly been stalled due to a funding disagreement between the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury.

Defence is believed to require an additional £18 billion, with several projects at risk due to cost-saving measures. While more money is expected to be allocated, it may still fall £4 billion short of what is needed.

Impact on the Royal Navy

The Type 83 guided-missile destroyers are still in early design stages, with plans to replace the six Type 45s between 2035 and 2038. The exact number of Type 83s remains unclear. The Type 45s are among the world's most advanced warships but have faced availability issues. Any delays to the Type 83 programme would likely extend the service life of the Type 45s.

Concerns about the shrinking Royal Navy have grown. In May, HMS Iron Duke was effectively withdrawn from active service, leaving the UK with only five frigates for frontline duties. The timeline for replacing the ageing Type 23 fleet remains uncertain.
