The Met Office has extended its amber extreme heat warning into Sunday morning (June 28), now in place until 9am. The warning covers parts of the East Midlands, East of England, and London and South East England, following a week of record-breaking temperatures across the UK.
Record Temperatures and Extended Warning
According to the Met Office, the UK provisionally broke its maximum temperature record for a third consecutive day on Friday (June 26), with the mercury hitting 37.3°C at Santon Downham in Suffolk. This surpassed the previous record of 35.6°C set in 1957 and 1976. The forecaster now expects the warm weather to continue overnight and into Sunday morning, with eastern areas retaining warmth the longest and temperatures remaining above 20°C overnight.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Dan Harris said: "While many in the UK will already be noticing a drop in temperatures, those in eastern England especially are in for another uncomfortably warm and humid night on Saturday, prolonging the potential for health-related impacts." He added: "By Sunday, fresher air from the Atlantic will be almost country wide; the far east of East Anglia hanging on to very warm but less humid weather followed by a much fresher nighttime for all. Temperatures will return much nearer to average for all by the start of next week."
Health Advice and Travel Disruptions
During the amber warning, the Met Office has warned of "adverse health effects" for those vulnerable to extreme heat, while the wider population faces risks of sunburn, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses. People are advised to keep out of the sun and avoid exercise between 11am and 3pm, take on plenty of water, stay in the shade, and wear suncream and a hat. The Met Office also warns of potential travel delays and advises those using public transport to allow extra time and carry water and a hand-held battery fan.
