Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has shared his thoughts on a potential bank holiday should England win the World Cup. The government could announce a conditional bank holiday on Friday, July 24, if the Three Lions are victorious in the tournament.
England's Path to the Final
The squad is just one game away from reaching the final. If England triumph in tonight's semi-final against Lionel Messi's Argentina side, they would become the second senior England team to reach a men's World Cup final since the famous 1966 victory on home soil.
Prime Minister's Plans
According to reports, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will attend the World Cup final on Sunday in New York if England make it through. His trip would occur just hours before he tenders his resignation to the King, following his announcement last month that he would step down as leader of the Labour Party.
Starmer is passionate about an England win, as he could announce a bank holiday on Friday, July 24, granted only in the event of a World Cup victory. Holding it on that date would give businesses time to prepare and likely coincide with the team's victory parade.
Starmer's Comments
Speaking about the possibility, the Prime Minister told reporters at the Nato summit earlier this month: “On the question of a bank holiday, I don't want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final.”
