England have handed Ollie Robinson another opportunity to fulfil his potential as a "world class" bowler, recalling the seamer in a revamped Test squad that features three uncapped players: Emilio Gay, James Rew, and Sonny Baker.
New Faces and Fresh Starts
The selection panel, now including Marcus North following his move from Durham, has made significant changes after the Ashes defeat. Returning spinner Rehan Ahmed is also included, while the trio of debutants are set to feature in next month's Lord's Test against New Zealand.
Robinson's Second Chance
The 32-year-old Sussex bowler has impressive Test statistics, with 76 wickets at an average of 22.92 in just 20 matches. However, he has been out of favour since February 2024 due to concerns about his fitness, pace, and relationship with team leadership. A strong start to the county season has earned him a recall as England seek a premier new-ball bowler following the retirements of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Chris Woakes.
Rob Key, managing director of men's cricket, stated: "Ollie Robinson, fit and at his best, is one of the best bowlers in the world. When he's bowling at 82-83 mph, he is world class. His record is among the best globally, statistically. We've monitored him closely, and he looks back to full fitness. He's not disruptive; we just need to trust what we'll get."
Uncapped Trio
Durham's Emilio Gay replaces Zak Crawley at the top of the order after impressing with three centuries and an average of 92 in Division Two. James Rew, a wicketkeeping option, provides batting depth, while Hampshire's Sonny Baker, known for his pace, comes in despite expensive debuts in white-ball cricket. Jofra Archer is not rushed back for the first Test, focusing on the second Test at the Kia Oval.
Key explained: "We're balancing having our best players available with managing their workloads. We want them fresh and ready to perform."
