The Liberal Democrats have officially selected Councillor Richard Kilpatrick as their candidate for the Greater Manchester mayoral election, scheduled for July 30. Kilpatrick, who has represented Didsbury West since 2018, has vowed to address the cost of living crisis, enhance public services, and deliver more housing across the region.
Kilpatrick's Political Background
Kilpatrick lost his council seat to Labour in 2021 but successfully reclaimed it in the 2023 local elections. A former teacher, he has recently focused on campaigning for stronger UK-EU ties, support for unpaid carers, and increased investment in social care—a cause close to his heart after caring for his mother, who had Alzheimer's.
Liberal Democrat Gains in Greater Manchester
The Liberal Democrats have been gaining traction in Greater Manchester, most notably taking control of Stockport Council in May’s local elections. This marked the first time in 15 years that any party secured the 32 seats required for a majority in Stockport.
Kilpatrick's Statement
Commenting on his selection, Kilpatrick said: "This is an incredibly important time for our fantastic city and I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Greater Manchester Mayoral election. Our region has so much potential but voters have been let down by Labour’s complacency, whilst all Reform offer is division. In this election we have a real opportunity to champion the issues that matter most to people, from making transport more affordable, investing in social care and restoring neighbourhood policing to truly make people in our community feel safe."
Other Candidates in the Race
Kilpatrick is the fourth candidate to enter the mayoral race. Labour's candidate is Bev Craig, leader of Manchester Council. The Green Party has nominated Trafford councillor Geraldine Coggins. Restore Britain announced Marlon West as its contender on Monday. Reform UK has yet to decide on its candidate.
