Zelenskyy Honoured with International Four Freedoms Award for Ukraine's Resilience
Zelenskyy Receives Four Freedoms Award for Ukraine's Courage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been honoured with the prestigious International Four Freedoms Award at a ceremony held on Thursday, 16 April 2026. The award recognises his steadfast leadership and the remarkable courage and resilience demonstrated by the Ukrainian people in the face of Russia's full-scale invasion, which began over four years ago.

A Tribute to Unwavering Courage

The Roosevelt Foundation, established in 1982 to honour the Four Freedoms outlined by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941, bestowed this significant accolade. Hugo de Jonge, chair of the foundation, emphasised the profound respect for Ukraine's perseverance, stating, "We pay the highest tribute to the unwavering courage and enduring perseverance of the Ukrainian people and to the steadfast and resolute leadership of their president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy."

Acceptance on Behalf of Ukraine

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who attended the ceremony, highlighted Zelenskyy's humility, noting that the president only agreed to accept the award on behalf of all Ukrainians. This gesture underscores the collective spirit of the nation amidst ongoing conflict.

Prestigious Legacy of the Award

The International Four Freedoms Award has a distinguished history, with past recipients including global icons such as Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and organisations like the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. This places Zelenskyy and Ukraine among an elite group recognised for their contributions to freedom and human rights.

Other Award Recipients

Alongside Zelenskyy, several other individuals and groups were honoured for their efforts in promoting the Four Freedoms:

  • Freedom from Fear Award: French rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot.
  • Freedom of Speech Award: The Committee to Protect Journalists.
  • Freedom from Want Award: Isidora Uribe Silva from Chile, recognised for her advocacy for inclusion and gender equality.
  • Freedom of Worship Award: The winner was not publicly announced due to security concerns.

Diplomatic Engagements and Support

Following the ceremony, Zelenskyy met with Prime Minister Jetten to discuss ongoing support. The Netherlands has been a key ally, providing military aid such as Patriot missiles and fighter jets. Recently, Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius announced a 248 million euro investment in drones for the Ukrainian military.

European Support Efforts

In a whirlwind diplomatic tour, Zelenskyy visited three European capitals within 48 hours this week, seeking further military and financial assistance. Agreements include a 4 billion euro defence package with Germany and a 9 billion euro pledge from Norway, as confirmed by Ukrainian officials. These efforts highlight the ongoing need for international solidarity as peace talks remain stalled.

Ceremony Location and Significance

The awards were presented in the New Church in Middelburg, Zeeland, a location of historical significance as the ancestral home of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This setting adds a layer of symbolism to the event, connecting past ideals of freedom with present-day struggles.

As Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty, this award serves as a powerful reminder of the global recognition for its resilience and the leadership of President Zelenskyy in navigating one of the most challenging periods in modern history.
