Zayn Malik Reveals Personal Struggles and Fatherhood's Impact on New Album
Former One Direction member Zayn Malik has embarked on a deeply personal journey, exploring his cultural heritage through his latest album, Konnakol, which has debuted at number 3 on the UK's Official Albums Chart. In a candid interview, the 33-year-old singer opened up about his life before becoming a father, his fears for the future, and the inspiration behind his new music.
Cultural Roots and Musical Influences
Drawing heavily on his Pakistani background, Malik's new album mixes traditional sounds with contemporary R&B. He expressed pride in representing his culture, stating, "I'm educating people about where I come from in the world. Because it's my culture. It's amazing. It makes me look at my job like I've got a purpose." He cited Pakistani singer-songwriter Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as a major influence, describing him as "my guy, my Elvis" and noting the hypnotic, meditative quality of his music that inspired Malik to create a "sexy R&B record with an Indian element."
Challenges and Controversies
Despite the positive reception of Konnakol, Malik has faced a series of setbacks in recent weeks. The album's launch was marred by a heart scare that required hospitalization and forced him to cancel promotional events, including a planned trip to London. Additionally, allegations of a physical altercation with former One Direction bandmate Louis Tomlinson have surfaced, though neither artist has publicly addressed the claims. A Netflix series they were reportedly filming has been cancelled as a result.
Fatherhood as a Turning Point
Malik, who co-parents his five-year-old daughter Khai with ex-partner Gigi Hadid, revealed that he had lost his sense of enjoyment before her birth. He confessed, "I wasn't enjoying things anymore. Now I am and I can tell a difference. There's a big difference." Reflecting on his time in One Direction, he admitted that the intense scrutiny contributed to his unhappiness, but fatherhood reignited his passion for life and performance. He credited Khai with giving him the confidence to return to the stage, leading to his successful Stairway to the Sky Tour between 2024 and 2025.
Fears and Future Aspirations
While grateful for his role as a father, Malik expressed anxiety about Khai growing older and potentially needing him less. He shared, "I'm scared of her getting older because then I'm thinking, my purpose will diminish again. Maybe she might not need me as much and that's kind of scary to think about." Despite these fears, he remains focused on his career, with fans hoping he recovers in time for his upcoming world tour, set to begin at Manchester's AO Arena on May 12.
Personal Life and Hobbies
Living on a farm in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Malik enjoys a quiet life with his pets, including chickens, turtles, cats, and dogs. He also indulges in hobbies like painting Warhammer figurines, a passion he developed in childhood. He humorously noted that his father, Yaser, who worked in urban music, has been enthusiastically playing his new songs, potentially spoiling the album's surprise for neighbors.
Gratitude and Growth
Malik expressed gratitude for his upbringing in Bradford, the 2025 UK City of Culture, praising its creative community. He has also reflected on personal growth since leaving One Direction, becoming "a lot more mature in the last few years." He attributed this transformation to Khai, stating, "What have I learned from her? That life is f***ing beautiful. She's full of love and I didn't feel like I was for a very long time. So, she's opened my eyes to that and brought that love back for me."
