A couple featured on A Place in the Sun have decided to keep looking for their ideal holiday home in Mallorca after turning down several options. In a repeat episode broadcast today, retirees Liz and Tony from Yorkshire were searching for a retreat on the Balearic island with a budget of approximately £190,000 and some flexibility up to £220,000.
Former solicitor Liz and retired government officer Tony first met nearly 40 years ago and married just six months later, describing their romance as a 'whirlwind'. After numerous visits to Mallorca, they were determined to buy a property there. 'There are lovely places, nice coastal resorts, people are generally friendly,' Tony said. 'I've always had a wish to have a property overseas; it's always been a dream of mine.'
Property expert Jean Johannson showed them several homes across the island. Despite one property offering 'breathtaking' views and another coming in well under budget, the couple were ultimately disheartened. The final property they viewed, a three-bedroom flat on the 10th floor priced at £229,060, was described by Jean as 'amazing'. Liz remarked, 'You have saved the best till last,' but Jean later noted her clients appeared 'underwhelmed'. Liz pointed out that the flat directly faced a hotel, and Tony remained unconvinced by the location. 'I don't want to rule it out at this stage, but I need some time to think about it,' he said.
The following day, Jean acknowledged the pressure was on, as three properties she had presented had become unavailable. After deliberation, the pair weren't sold on the options. Liz explained, 'That apartment was everything we asked for... but the location was the issue for me,' Tony added. Jean responded, 'What a shame, so the property was perfect, but the location didn't quite work for you.'
The couple also weren't enthusiastic about other properties. Liz admitted, 'It's certainly made us reconsider the location that we wanted, but I think the issues that we had with the properties in Soller are still too big for us to overcome.' Tony said the search had made him more determined and opened his eyes to what was available. He considered that they might need to increase their budget. Jean agreed, saying, 'I think that's a great idea because it has been a challenge. That budget in this market in Mallorca right now.'
Tony concluded, 'It's been a fantastic learning experience and a great opportunity,' while Liz added, 'We just didn't find the right property, but we will.' A Place in the Sun airs weekdays from 3pm on Channel 4.
