US Senator and former Trump vice-presidential hopeful JD Vance has ignited a diplomatic firestorm by publicly advocating for a shocking military action. The Republican politician suggested that the United States should launch a 'pirate' strike on a Venezuelan scientific research vessel currently docked in Guyanese waters.
The controversial comments, made on social media platform X, have been widely condemned as a dangerous escalation in the ongoing territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana over the oil-rich Essequibo region.
A Call for 'Pirate' Tactics
Senator Vance's proposal was stark. "The United States should sink the Venezuelan ship. Not a military strike, a pirate strike. And then say obviously we had nothing to do with it," he wrote. This call for a covert, deniable attack has drawn immediate parallels to historical acts of maritime aggression and has been labelled reckless by foreign policy experts.
Escalating Tensions in the Essequibo
The vessel at the centre of the storm, the RV Boa Esperanza, is currently stationed near Georgetown, Guyana. Venezuelan authorities maintain the ship is conducting oceanic research. However, Guyana views its presence as a provocative act and a direct challenge to its sovereignty, further inflaming a bitter century-old dispute over the resource-laden territory.
The situation is so volatile that a British Royal Navy vessel, HMS Trent, is already in the region, participating in joint exercises with Guyanese forces—a clear signal of international concern and support for Guyana.
