Trump Ally, Conspiracy Theorists, and Steven Seagal Join Putin's 'Davos'
US Guests at Putin's 'Davos' Include Trump Ally and Seagal

The St Petersburg International Economic Forum, often described as Russia's answer to the Davos summit, commenced on Wednesday, drawing an eclectic mix of international attendees. The event comes at a critical time, with reports indicating that top Russian finance officials have urged President Vladimir Putin to curb escalating defence spending amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

US Delegation and Notable Figures

The forum has attracted several prominent American figures, including Rodney Mims Cook Jr., Chairman of the US Commission of Fine Arts. Cook, who is overseeing President Donald Trump's controversial White House ballroom extension, is leading what the Kremlin describes as the official US delegation to the forum. This marks the first time a US official has attended the event since 2017-2018, prior to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Cook told Russia's TASS state news agency that he is representing the US as a minister of culture and as a Christian, not as a politician. He has previously assisted in restoring churches in Russia and recently gifted a religious icon to a monastery in St Petersburg. Robert Agee, head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, noted that Cook's presence is a positive signal of Trump's desire to improve US-Russia relations, though he stopped short of calling it an official delegation.

Controversial Influencers and Celebrities

Right-wing social media influencer Candace Owens is also attending the forum. Owens, known for sharing unfounded conspiracy theories, will speak on a panel about balancing parenthood with a successful career. She has faced legal action from French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte over false claims that Brigitte was born male.

Former Hollywood action star Steven Seagal, a long-time Putin admirer and Russian passport holder, is listed as a participant in a cultural panel. Seagal has supported Russia's annexation of Crimea and its war in Ukraine, and has been banned from entering Ukraine.

Influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate, who face human trafficking charges in Romania, posted videos of their arrival in Moscow but have not confirmed their attendance at the forum. Andrew Tate, a self-described misogynist, has a large online following.

Economic Context

The forum takes place against a backdrop of economic strain. Defence officials have informed Putin that the Russian military will require billions of additional dollars this year to sustain the conflict, according to Bloomberg News. The Kremlin is seeking to bolster its economic position while managing the costs of war.

The presence of these US figures highlights Russia's efforts to project an image of international engagement and its appeal to those who align with its emphasis on traditional values and anti-woke rhetoric.
