Trump Vows to Prosecute Media Over Leak That Endangered US Airman Rescue Mission

President Donald Trump has declared his administration will aggressively pursue what he called a "sick" leaker who revealed that the United States was searching for a second missing airman after an F-15E fighter jet was downed over Iran. During a Monday briefing, Trump stated that the unnamed media company responsible for the report would be compelled to surrender its source or face severe legal consequences, including potential jail time.

National Security Threat from Media Disclosure

"We're gonna go to the media company that released it and we're gonna say: 'National security. Give it up or go to jail,'" Trump asserted. The President explained that press reports about the ongoing rescue operation alerted Iranian authorities to the fact that a second US service member remained at large, thereby endangering American lives and compromising the mission.

"They didn't know there was somebody missing until this leaker gave the information," Trump emphasised. "All of a sudden, the entire country of Iran knew that there was a pilot that was somewhere on their land that was fighting for his life." He added, "We have to find that leaker, because that's a sick person."

Daring Rescue Operation Details

The incident began on Good Friday when two airmen went missing after their F-15E fighter jet was shot down behind enemy lines. The pilot was successfully rescued within hours by special operations commandos, but the jet's weapons system operator (WSO) remained missing until Sunday morning. The WSO endured nearly 48 hours in hostile territory, evading Iranian hunting parties who were offered a $60,000 bounty for his capture.

Trump described an extensive, all-hands-on-deck operation involving 155 aircraft, including:

  • 64 fighter jets
  • 48 refueling tankers
  • 13 rescue aircraft
  • 3 helicopters
  • Additional support craft

The President lauded the mission as "a breathtaking show of skill and precision, lethality and force." He recounted how the injured WSO, who landed separately from the pilot and was bleeding profusely, scaled cliff faces, treated his own wounds, and eventually radioed in with the message "God is good" before US forces tracked and extracted him on Easter Sunday.

Media Reports and Investigation

The initial report about the rescued pilot appears to have originated from an Israeli journalist working for Tel Aviv-based Channel 12, who posted on X around 11:20 AM ET on Friday. This was quickly followed by confirmations from major US media outlets including Axios, CBS News, and Reuters.

A White House official later confirmed to the Daily Mail that an investigation into the leak is currently underway. The White House has not yet specified which outlet or reporter will be targeted for potential prosecution.

Complications and Criticism

Tommy Vietor, a former spokesman for Barack Obama, noted on X that the journalist involved is based in Israel, which could complicate Trump's legal efforts. "Does that mean Trump is going to prosecute Israeli journalists or media execs, including ones close to Netanyahu?" Vietor questioned. "What if the source was Netanyahu himself or his team?"

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Israeli journalist for comment, but no response has been received at this time.

Timeline of the Extraction

  1. Friday morning, April 3: An F-15E Strike Eagle is hit by Iranian fire near Talkhuncheh, Isfahan Province. Both crew members eject, with the WSO becoming injured and separated from the pilot.
  2. Friday daytime: US special forces helicopters rescue the pilot but come under fire and are unable to reach the WSO. Two helicopters are hit, and an A-10 Warthog is later downed.
  3. Hours 1-24: The WSO hikes approximately 20 kilometres and climbs 7,000 feet up a mountain while evading Iranian forces. The CIA locates him and initiates a deception operation to mislead Iranians.
  4. Saturday morning: US special forces, including SEAL Team 6, launch a second rescue mission using MH-6 Little Birds to extract the WSO from a mountain top.
  5. Saturday afternoon: Complications arise when aircraft get stuck at a desert airstrip, forcing the destruction of equipment to prevent capture before the successful escape.

Trump concluded his remarks by stating, "God was watching us," in reference to the successful, odds-defying operation that ultimately brought both airmen home safely despite the challenges posed by the media leak.
