Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is on track to receive the largest pay-cheque in film history for his role in the upcoming Top Gun 3, with earnings projected to reach an astonishing £100 million. This monumental sum follows his previous success, where he pocketed £75 million from the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, thanks to a lucrative deal that granted him a significant portion of the movie's massive box office profits.
Breaking Down the Record-Breaking Deal
The 63-year-old actor, who will reprise his iconic role as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, is set to earn a reported £18 million base salary along with approximately 8 per cent of the film's profits. Should Top Gun 3 match the financial performance of its predecessor, which grossed £1.1 billion globally, Cruise stands to rake in over £75 million from profit share alone, pushing his total compensation well beyond the £100 million mark.
Strategic Moves Behind the Scenes
Top Gun 3 was officially confirmed by Paramount film co-head Josh Greenstein during last week's CinemaCon event in Las Vegas. Behind the scenes, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Cruise himself, and Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger are already deeply involved in developing the script for the highly anticipated blockbuster.
A senior Paramount executive emphasised the critical role Cruise plays in the franchise, stating: 'Top Gun: Maverick was the biggest movie of Tom's career and the film which brought audiences back to cinemas after the Covid pandemic. There is no Top Gun without Tom, so the initial salary is a given.'
Confidence from Paramount's Leadership
The generous profit-sharing arrangement is backed by David Ellison, the new owner of Paramount, who produced Maverick through his company Skydance. Ellison has expressed unwavering confidence in Cruise's value, believing the actor is worth every penny of the investment.
'He is confident this film will earn over a billion dollars,' the Paramount insider revealed, highlighting the high expectations for the project's commercial success. Ellison has identified Top Gun 3 as a top priority for the studio and has committed to remaining in the 'Cruise business' as long as the A-list star wishes to collaborate on storytelling ventures. The pair have already worked together on ten films, solidifying a strong professional partnership.
Legacy and Future of the Franchise
The second Top Gun film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, not only revitalised the franchise but also introduced new characters portrayed by Miles Teller and Glen Powell, who played young pilots under Cruise's mentorship. This successful formula is expected to continue in the third instalment, which is scheduled for release in the summer of 2028.
With production already underway and a clear financial strategy in place, Tom Cruise's landmark deal sets a new benchmark for actor compensation in Hollywood, reflecting both his star power and the enduring appeal of the Top Gun series.
