Pope Leo XIV Defends Vatican's Peace Mission Following Trump's Scathing Remarks
Pope Leo XIV has firmly defended the Vatican's appeals for peace and reconciliation, stating they are deeply rooted in the Gospel, in response to President Trump's extraordinary criticism. The Pope emphasised that he does not fear the Trump administration, following the president's broadside that labelled him as "liberal," "weak on crime," and "terrible for Foreign Policy."
Trump's Accusations and the Vatican's Response
President Trump launched a scathing attack on Pope Leo XIV, particularly targeting the Vatican's stance on the U.S.-Israel war in Iran and Venezuela. Trump suggested that the Pope's position was influenced by his American nationality and the need to deal with him, urging the pontiff to "stop catering to the Radical Left" and focus on being a "Great Pope, not a Politician." In reply, Pope Leo XIV clarified that his general appeals for peace and criticisms of a "delusion of omnipotence" were not direct attacks but rather part of the Church's core mission to build bridges of peace and avoid war.
Support from U.S. Catholic Bishops
Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, expressed dismay at Trump's remarks, asserting that Pope Leo XIV is the "Vicar of Christ" who speaks from the Gospel's truth, not a political rival. This support underscores the Church's commitment to its spiritual and moral guidance, independent of political pressures.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between religious leadership and political figures, with the Vatican reaffirming its dedication to peace and reconciliation as fundamental principles.
