The Philippine government has taken decisive diplomatic action against Beijing following what it describes as "aggressive" manoeuvres by Chinese vessels in the hotly contested South China Sea.
Manila summoned a senior Chinese diplomat on Monday to demand a comprehensive explanation after Philippine boats were allegedly rammed and damaged during a routine resupply mission near the Second Thomas Shoal.
Dangerous Encounter in Disputed Waters
According to Philippine officials, Chinese coastguard ships employed water cannon attacks and executed dangerous blocking manoeuvres against Philippine vessels. The confrontation reportedly resulted in significant damage to at least two Philippine boats, raising serious concerns about maritime safety and regional stability.
The incident represents one of the most serious escalations in recent months in the long-running territorial dispute over the resource-rich waterway. China claims virtually the entire South China Sea, despite competing claims from multiple Southeast Asian nations including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs issued a strongly worded statement condemning the actions as "in violation of international law." Officials emphasized that such behaviour directly threatens the peace and stability of the region.
This latest confrontation comes amid increasing frequency of similar incidents, with Manila documenting numerous cases of what it describes as Chinese aggression in Philippine-claimed exclusive economic zones.

The United States has repeatedly affirmed its defence commitment to the Philippines under the mutual defence treaty, though it remains unclear how recent incidents might trigger such agreements.
