Nicole Kidman Embarks on New Career Path as Death Doula
In a heartfelt revelation, acclaimed actress Nicole Kidman has announced she is pursuing training to become a death doula, a role dedicated to providing comfort and guidance to individuals at the end of their lives. The 58-year-old Oscar winner shared this personal career shift during a recent talk at the University of San Francisco, explaining that the inspiration stemmed from the loss of her mother, Janelle Kidman, who passed away at age 84 in September 2024.
A Personal Motivation Behind the Professional Shift
Kidman described how her mother's final days highlighted a profound need for impartial support during the dying process. "As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide," Kidman told the audience, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. "Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn't in the world anymore, and that's when I went, 'I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.'"
This experience led Kidman to see death doula work as a meaningful expansion of her life's purpose. "So that's part of my expansion and one of the things I will be learning," she affirmed. While becoming a death doula does not currently require formal credentials, numerous training courses and intensive workshops are available both online and in-person for those interested in this compassionate field.
Navigating Grief and Family Dynamics
The actress has been open about her journey through grief since her mother's death. Kidman learned of her mother's passing while attending the 2024 Venice Film Festival for her film Babygirl with director Halina Reijn. This loss came a decade after the death of her father, clinical psychologist Antony Kidman, in 2014.
In a previous interview with Allure, Kidman reflected on the transformative impact of her mother's death. "Losing my mother changed every part of me," she shared. "I spoke to her every second or third day. And because she was on the other side of the world, if I woke up at 5:00 a.m., I'd get up, I'd walk around the block, and I'd talk to her for an hour before the girls got up, before Keith got up. That was the rhythm of my day."
She admitted to feeling "raw" with grief and sometimes questioning whether to discuss it publicly, but ultimately embraced sharing her experience. "Maybe it's my sense of what I feel I should be doing. I'm trying to be quiet and have it be a more intimate thing with just my friends or my sister," she explained. Kidman concluded, "I'm on the journey of grief, the year of magical thinking."
Family Background and Personal Life
Nicole Kidman's family includes four children: two from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise and two from her former marriage to Keith Urban. Her younger sister, Antonia Kidman, 55, has six children, adding to the large family network that Kidman balances alongside her career.
Known for iconic roles in films like Moulin Rouge!, Kidman continues to navigate her professional and personal life with resilience. Her decision to become a death doula marks a significant, heartfelt departure from her acting career, driven by a desire to offer solace to others facing end-of-life challenges.
