King Charles delivered a series of humorous remarks during a state banquet with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, marking his first state visit to the United States as monarch. The event, part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of American independence, saw the King lighten the formal atmosphere with well-timed jokes.
Toasting the occasion, His Majesty quipped that the lavish dinner was “a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party,” referencing the 1773 protest that sparked the American Revolution. The comment drew laughter from the assembled guests.
The King also poked fun at President Trump’s new East Wing ballroom project at the White House, and joked that the US should be grateful the UK had not left them speaking French. The speech was met with applause and giggles throughout the evening.
